Grassroots Organizing

Justice for day laborers is a community struggle!

Our Programs:

We mobilize community members in defense of immigrant and worker rights by organizing teams of rapid responders and legal observers, and by demanding that public officials pass legislation that protects and empowers workers and immigrants. We organize at the intersection of immigrant and worker rights, and we do this work in coalition with the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, One Oregon, The Coalition of Communities of Color, the Coalition to Stop Wage Theft, and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. Voz has been integral to the City of Portland and Multnomah County declaring Sanctuary Status, and we have trained and mobilized hundreds of trained Rapid Responders and Legal Observers to defend immigrant communities. Grassroots Organizing Victories:

  • Played instrumental role in campaigns to limit Police/ICE collaboration in Portland, including an end to ICE holds and the City of Portland and Multnomah County declaring Sanctuary status!
  • Organized with the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition to form a state-wide rapid response network and Immigration Enforcement Information Hotline after the 2016 Presidential election
  • Successfully organized with the Coalition to Stop Wage Theft to pass legislation that strengthens penalties for employers who cheat workers out of wages, creates more penalties for the subcontractors who often hire day laborers, and creates more avenues for workers to file claims and reclaim their wages!
  • Voz is a founding member of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, which has grown to include over 70 Worker Centers around the Country and coordinates national campaigns such as the #Not1More campaign and the campaign to Defend TPS
